The Next Elder Scrolls Game

Elder Scrolls on Gamotere continues with a look forward to the next Elder Scrolls game. Here's what I think might happen. Please note that this is pure speculation which is (mostly) based on things we know.

When Will It Be Released?

I have a suspicion that the next Elder Scrolls game isn't actually as far away as we think. Skyrim was released in 2011 and it's fairly certain that Bethesda's main studio (Bethesda Softworks) who make Elder Scrolls and Fallout are making a new game in the latter franchise, which will probably be revealed at Bethesda's E3 presentation this year. However, I wonder if another studio in the Bethesda family is working on a title similar to the Elder Scrolls Travels games or maybe even an expansion to Skyrim.

If I'm wrong about that, and even if it does happen, I don't think we'll get another proper Elder Scrolls until Autumn 2017 at the earliest. If Fallout does incredibly (which, by all indications, and assuming that the game is good, then it should) maybe we'll get Fallout 4 and 5 before Elder Scrolls VI and VII.

Where Will It Be Set?

Since Morrowind, each of the Elder Scrolls games so far has been titled the name of the region where the game is predominantly set. I see no reason why that shouldn't continue. But, that doesn't answer the question. In my opinion, we've already been told the answer to this. After the final piece of Skyrim DLC was finished, Bethesda wrote a blogpost. In it there was one thing that a fan on the Elder Scrolls Wikia latched onto, and I completely agree with. The use of the word elsewhere. The exact quote is as follows: "We hope you stay engaged in the gaming community here and elsewhere." Now, while this could simply be coincidence, there is a region in Tamriel called Elsewyr (pronounced elsewhere), and a game hasn't yet been set there.

While this is fairly far fetched, the more I think about it, the more it kind of makes sense. I don't think, as many people do, that the next game will be all across Tamriel. I think that will be either in the last game, or confined to The Elder Scrolls Online - which is where it really belongs.

What Will It Be About?

This is somewhat harder to predict, and I haven't got any wild theories here. However (cue wild theory) I wrote somewhere a while ago that I thought the next Elder Scrolls game would focus on the Dwemer. The Dwemer were supposed to have disappeared from Tamriel a long time ago in circumstances which are somewhat mysterious and that I will leave you to delve into and have fun exploring. While I don't believe this as much any more, I do think that would be an awesome game, and could be set wherever the Dwemer have gone.

This would also explain the huge amount of nods to them in Skyrim. All the quests focusing on Dwarven ruins and the exploration of Blackreach, a huge cavern under Skyrim where the Dwemer once dwelled.

While I think that would be awesome - I don't think it's going to happen for a while: if ever. Maybe the Dwemer mystery is best left untold.

If this is the case, then I don't think we can be sure what the story will follow. All I can say is that it will probably be awesome. Bethesda seem to have a talent for making awesome games.
